"Florentia", the florid, was the name given from the Romans to the little settlement built in the I century a.C. at the foot of the ancient Etruscan Fiesole.
Florentia became soon a real city with its own forum (nowadays Piazza della Repubblica), the thermal bath (via delle Terme), the amphitheatre (via Torta).
Since the 200 the city started its flourishing in the arts, in the culture and the international business, and reached the height during the 400 under the rule of Cosimo and Lorenzo de' Medici.
The Granducato survived, with alternate phases, until the politic unification of Italy. Florence was the capital from the 1865 to 1871.
Its beauties are famous all over the world, like piazza della Signoria with Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti and the artistic wonders kept in the many museum of the city, first of all the Galleria degli Uffizi.
