The oldest part of Colle Val d'Elsa is situated on a hill top and the narrow little valleys around of it divide the urban plane in 3 parts: Piano, Borgo and Castello, nowadays are simply called Colle Bassa (the lower part) and Colle Alta (the higher part).
Here was born at the end of 500 the glass industry, that was the anticipation of the production of Crystal, for which Colle is famous all over the world.
Colle Val d'Elsa is also the city of the famous architect Arnolfo di Cambio, who planned the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence. The house where he was born is a wonderful tower situated in the main street of Castello and nowadays is possible to visit it.
The city offers a lot of suggestiveness to the visitors: from the works of art collected in the Civic and Sacred Art Museum, situated at the Palazzo dei Priori, that is a work of art by itself, to the suggestions of the history kept in the beautiful collection of the Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli Museum.
In the Crystal Museum you could see products and machineries used for the production of this precious material.
